
With a focus on traditional music Magnus Turpie is a musician and composer in Edinburgh with a range of instrumental and collaborative skills. Magnus is a confident and experienced performer and has worked on many public music projects around Scotland and online. His performances bring a warm and engaging presence to any audience and he is motivated and dedicated to broadening his skills and exploring new and challenging experiences.
Magnus Turpie : “reaches the parts others can’t reach” and has also has formed a band called “The Magnus Turpie Combo”. Magnus regularly volunteers with ‘Totally Sound/Reel Youth Media weekend project in Edinburgh. He is grateful to all of those agencies, as well as Creative Scotland’s ‘Create Inclusion II initiative for their support.
Finally, Magnus is a musician who happens to have ‘Down Syndrome’ – possible the least represented of all characteristics protected under the Equality Act (2010) in the Traditional Music making community. Magnus’s hope is that sharing these insights into his music making life will increase visibility of this issue and encourage social and musical integration throughout.

Magnus Turpie plays a diatonic 3-row b/c/c# Stradella bass Paramount accordion.
Magnus has been performing in sessions, public and private events since 2017, including ‘Loud and Clear’ at The Scottish Parliament (2018), ‘Knight at the Castle (2018) with fiddler Isla Ratcliffe and accordionist Cavan Rodgers, where they supported singer/songwriter Sophie Penman.

On 20 Jan 2024, Magnus performed with his band at Glasgow’s ‘Celtic Connections’ ‘Battle of the Folk Bands’ event, curated by ‘Hands Up For Trad’..
During 2023, Magnus piloted ‘Pathways’ programmes for ‘Live Music Now Scotland’ and ‘Feis Rois’, both of which organisations recognise the under representation of people with additional support needs.
Magnus is also a composer, working towards completion and recording of a’4 Seasons Suite’ with ‘Drake music scotland’ in a more ‘lounge jazz’ style. He is responsible for creating the ubiquitous ‘Magnus’s Polka’ which has been gaining popularity nationwide and abroad since its creation in 2013.
